چکیده

Abstract—We address the problem where a mobile search agent seeks to find an unknown number of stationary objects distributed in a bounded search domain, and the search mission is subject to time/distance constraint. Our work accounts for false positives, false negatives and environmental uncertainty. We consider the case that the performance of a search sensor is dependent on the environment (e.g., clutter density), and therefore sensor performance is better in some locations than in others. For applications where environmental information can be acquired, we derive a decision-theoretic cost function to compute the locations where the environmental information should be acquired. We address the cases where environmental characterization is performed either by a separate vehicle or by the same vehicle that performs the search task.

Performance Evaluation of a Multi-Robot Search & Retrieval System: Experiences with MinDART

The costs of developing mobile robot teams can be reduced if they are designed to exploit swarm techniques. In this methodology many simple homogeneous units solve complex tasks through emergent behavior. The challenge lies in selecting an appropriate control strategy for the individual units. Complexity in design costs both money and time, therefore a control strategy should be just complex en...

Integrating Three Mechanisms of Visual Attention for Active Visual Search

Algorithms for robotic visual search can benefit from the use of visual attention methods in order to reduce computational costs. Here, we describe how three distinct mechanisms of visual attention can be integrated and productively used to improve search performance. The first is viewpoint selection as has been proposed earlier using a greedy search over a probabilistic occupancy grid represen...

Design and Fabrication of Ultralight High-Voltage Power Circuits for Flapping-Wing Robotic Insects

Flapping-wing robotic insects are small, highly maneuverable flying robots inspired by biologicalinsects and useful for a wide range of tasks, including exploration, environmental monitoring, searchand rescue, and surveillance. Recently, robotic insects driven by piezoelectric actuators have achievedthe important goal of taking off with external power; however, fully autonomous operation requir...

Measuring the Cost of Robotic Communication

Groups of robots are likely to accomplish certain tasks more quickly and robustly than single robots, [Jager and Nebel, 2001]. Many robotic domains such as robotic search and rescue, vacuuming, and waste cleanup are characterized by limited operating spaces where robots are likely to collide. In order to maintain group cohesion under such conditions, some type of information transfer is likely ...

Orienteering-based Path Selection for Mobile Sensors

The goal of information gathering is to obtain data from the environment generating an accurate model for the application of interest. In many applications the information gathering process requires to obtain measurement of the phenomena of interest in harsh or dangerous conditions (e.g., environmental monitoring applications of water in a lake or search and rescue operations in disaster respon...
